But authority did not take any step and she got ill for this huge pressure. She had to take leave for the span of three months. Scenario 2: After returning from the leave Jane found that there was shortage of worker and helping assistance. Again she cant handle the work load and got nervous attack for second time. Section 2(1) of the said Act specified that the employer should ensure the health and safety as far as possible (Hse.gov.uk, 2015). Section 2 (2) (a) mentioned that the employer must ensure a system of work which is health friendly. Section 2 (2) (d) specifies the provisions relating to preservation and appropriate condition of employment. Section 2 (2) (e) state the provisions relating to maintenance of pleasant working condition and environment for the employee (Hse.gov.uk, 2015).UK health and safety policy state that the management must aim to achieve good and workable condition in the work place. The policies can include reduction of occupational diseases or illness in any form like mental or physical, reduction of accidents in work place, supply high-quality working ambience, endorse psychological or physical comfort etc. Along with this the employer must provide health and safety policy statement if there are five and employee under him. The statement is the commitment of the management to provide proper health and safety. Analysis: Jane is a teacher and teaches in school of special child. These children obviously need more attention and care. So if the number of student increases then it somehow increases the burden on the teacher. Now due to some mistake he did an explosion which damages his hand. The main point is that he did not wear the gloves as advices by the head teacher. Scenario 2: Poppy was a teaching assistant in that school. She went to Sams lab for learning teaching methods. At the time when Sam met the accident she started taking the class. She also faced an accident which damages his hand and face. Sam blamed himself for the damage of poppy and got a nervous breakdown. Issues: The main fact in issues in this case was: Weather Sam can claim compensation for his damage? Can the school authority argue for contributory negligence from the part of Sam? Can Sam be held liable for the damage of Poppy? Applicable laws: As mentioned in the case of Jane Section 2 of the Act was applicable in this case also. Section 2 (2) (e) specifies that the employer can be held liable if do not take proper measure on the regard of health and safety. But the employers responsibility is limited if he took the reasonable and practicable care and caution. Section 7 of the Act is specifying the general duty of the employee at his work place. Section 7(a) states that it is the duty of the employee also to take practical care and causation for this own health and safety. Along with that he also has the responsibility to the other person associate with him at the work place. Section 7 (b) (Hse.gov.uk, 2015) specifies that if any reasonable duty imposed on him by the employer he must be cooperative and take necessary step as regard to it as mentioned in Jones v. Fishwick. In case of tort of negligence the three elements are essential. The employer must have the legal duty and he violates that duty. For the violation the employee suffers loss. This is the clause to establish a case of negligence against the employer. But the employer also has the duty to take defence of volenti non fit injuria or contributory negligence or contributory negligence or remoteness of damage. If the employer can prove that the employee know the danger and took the risk voluntarily he can escape from liability. Analysis: In this above mentioned scenarios, the Sam can raise the argument that the school authority is liable for the damage caused by him. He can claim that they had duties to promote safety measure which they violate and as a consequence of that violation Sam suffered the hand injury. But in this case the Scholl authority cannot be held liable under the Act or under aw of tort because Sam also ignorant about the safety measure. The head teacher told him to use gloves but he did not use it. The accident is not under the control of the school authority. They repeatedly told to use safety measures but if the employee is ignorant about the matter then the employer is not liable. In case of scenario 2 the Sam has the duty to take reasonable care and caution to the co employee but when he himself was injured Poppy took the class. He did not have proper training. Sam tries to warn him but failed. In this Sam is not liable the school authority is also not liable for the accident of Poppy because they sent her to learn the teaching styles but he voluntarily took the responsibility which is outside her course of employment. So in this case school authority has not violated any duty of care. So there is no case of negligence. Advice to Mr. James: Factual background: Mr. James was the Supply teacher. He was injured by a bucket and broke the arm. The bucket was placed by Poppy who dislikes James. The school authority did not take any stringent action against her. They give the warning and leave her. Issues: Can Mr. James claim any compensation for the wrongful activity of Poppy? Can the Local School Authority be held liable for negligence? Applicable laws: Retention of negligencetook place when the employer was unsuccessful in removing a member of staff from the position in that time when it was obvious that the employee misusing the power or authority imposed on him or her. The employer can be held liable for the negligence if he failed to supervise the activity of the employees which can be dangerous for the others. Analysis: In this above mentioned circumstance Mr. James can claim compensation from the School authority. The wrongful act was done by Poppy. But the school authority was ignorant to take any proper action against her. The employee whose activity is became dangerous to must be removed from the position otherwise it will amount to retention of negligence. The School authority did this negligence and liable to pay compensation for the damage suffered by Mr. James. They also fail to supervise the activity of the employee so this also leads to the case of negligence. Advice to Dave: Factual background: Scenario 1: Dave was the caretaker of the school. He can carry an amount of book but according to Janes order he had to carry a more than his capacity. Now he got a back ache and off from work. Scenario 2: Dave went to clean the laboratory. He was unaware of any chemicals stored there because all of them were unlevelled. The laboratory was too hot and he got a heat stroke for that unbearable heat. The problem was taken into the notice o the authority previously also that the laboratory was very suffocating and the air was not passed properly. For this suffocation Dave admitted to the hospital. Issues: The main fact in issue is: Can Dave claim compensation from the Local School Authority? Does the School authority violate any provision of law? Applicable laws: The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 was applicable Act in this respect. Section 2 of this Act specifies the duties of the employer to its respective employee (Walters, Wadsworth and Quinlan, 2013). The employer must have some duty to take proper precaution and care regarding the health and safety of the employee. Poverty and inequality go hand-in-hand and in order to eradicate poverty then we need to deal with inequality. Now, here is the problem, I find it difficult to simplify inequality. For example a poor person in the United States is better-off if compared to someone who struggles in a Third-World country. Inequality on the other hand is the same tricky problem. Minorities are citizens of this country but sometimes they feel as if they are second-class citizens and unable to access to resources that are open most Americans. In order to simplify the discussion I would like to focus on some of the aspects of inequality that is familiar to me. Therefore, I would like to focus on social mobility, access to health care, the right to education, and the right to eat nutritious food. In my opinion it does not matter where you live in the world, whether you are a European living in the trendiest cities or a citizen of Third-World country living in squalor, if you do not have access to the things that I mentioned above then you have experienced inequality and if you look around you the presence of inequality in society is the root cause of poverty. The study of Newtons Laws, impulse and momentum help to reduce initial momentum or decrease impulse (rate of change of momentum) to protect passengers. Within vehicles, many car safety devices are installed, such as seat belts, air bags, crumple zones and head rests. Modern road design reduces the initial or rate of change of momentum and consequently the impact of collision through crash barriers, speed zones and speed humps. Car safety devices Seatbelts Seatbelts are designed so that passengers are restrained instead of continuing to move forward at the cars speed when the brakes of a moving vehicle are applied. In this situation, there is a tendency for a body to resist changes to its motion, called inertia. (Newtons first law) The stopping force is applied to the more durable parts of the body such as hips, chest and shoulder. This is instead of the human head crashing into windshield if no seat belt is worn. Inertia reel seatbelts Inertia reel seatbelts have a cylinder that stores extra belt material on a spool. The spool turns freely normally for movement. In the event of a sudden change in velocity, a pendulum in the reel plunges forward to lock and restrain the occupant. It is named inertia reel due to the inertia of the pendulum to cause belt locking. Different types of seatbelt The lap seatbelt is tightened over the pelvis and absorbs force over a sizeable area. However they do not prevent the head and upper body from lurching forward in response to deceleration and are inadequate especially for front passengers, who risk hitting the windscreen. The lap sash seatbelt combines a lap seatbelt over the pelvis as well as over one shoulder across the chest. This greatly limits movement of the upper body and head as well as spreading the stopping force over a larger area. Shoulder harnesses restrain upper torso movement even further. Two are belts fall over the shoulders and an optional strap lies over the sternum. It is effective in the way force is spread over both shoulders compared to one shoulder in lap sash. Airbags Airbags provide an extra degree of protection in a collision by cushioning passengers in a collision, greatly limiting fatalities and serious injury. They are designed to increase the time interval during which the drivers momentum decreases in a collision to decrease the net force of the driver. They inflate when crash sensors detect large deceleration. Sensors then ignite the sodium azide, producing sodium compounds and nitrogen gas for a reactive explosion. The airbags inflate rapidly to cushion the impact of the passenger against the steering wheel, dashboard or windshield. Airbags are to be used with seatbelts, not as a replacement. A disadvantage of airbags is they provide no protection against side-on hits, only frontal collisions. More expensive cars are developing side airbags to combat this. Head rests Padded headrests provide protection in rear end collisions. When a car is rear-ended, a large net force pushes the car and it accelerates forward. The inertia, based on Newtons first law, pushes the passenger into the seat. Without a head rest for support, the head remains at rest until the spine pulls it forward. This sudden, sharp acceleration for the head causes it to fling back and results in hyperextension and whiplash injuries. Crumple Zones Many cars are designed to crumple at the front and rear. Crumple zones increase the time interval during which the momentum of the car changes during a collision, thus lessening the forces. Newtons second law (f=ma) can be applied, as increased ?time will result in a decreasing rate of deceleration a and consequently reduce force. Crumple zones are built using the integration of steel and fiberglass in the front and rear end assemblies of the automobile. Rigid structures between crumple zones protect the passenger compartment. In a collision, the crumple zones deform to slow the actual impact. The car doesnt regain all its original kinetic energy, as some of this is converted to heat and sound energy to reduce damage to passenger area through smaller forces. As crumple zones are placed in strategic locations, the collapse is controlled and energy from impact is directed away from passenger area. Road design Speed humps and low speed zones Local councils introduced Speed Humps to reduce the overall speed of cars. Evidence shows that slower moving cars cause less damage to occupants if a crash results. It has been estimated that risk of death or serious brain damage doubles with every 16km/h over 80km/h. Speed humps restrict drivers from speeding as hitting the hump too fast can cause car damage. Low speed zones also reduce the speed of cars. A reduction of speed will reduce the chance of an accident as drivers have more time to react as well as decreasing the change in momentum and associated inertial forces in collisions. The police enforces speed signs and limit zones and speeding is monitored by speed cameras. In NSW, the general urban limit is 60 km/h for roads in built up areas where there are pedestrians. Crash Barriers Crash barriers are road design features that absorb the impact of collisions. They are constructed out of steel, concrete or wire. Some types of rigid crash barriers cannot absorb much of the kinetic energy of the vehicle, but keep the vehicle on the road and prevent crashing into more dangerous roadside hazards or cars from opposite direction. Crash barriers should be relatively weak with energy absorbing structures so that they can deform easily and transfer large amounts of kinetic energy to them in collisions. For barriers shielding against hazards such as trees, they need to be a fair distance away, as space is needed for it to deform. When a vehicle collides, the barriers deform and stop the vehicle through a plowing action, keeping the reaction forces relatively low. The impulse (change in momentum) is reduced, as the vehicle takes longer to slow down. The disadvantage of crash barriers is they may cause vehicle damage (crumpling) and rigid ones may deflect a car into the opposite lane. The advance of road safety The development of vehicles with greater size, power and momentum has resulted in the need for improvements in car safety devices and modern road design. The study of physics has allowed safety features in both the interior and exterior of cars to prevent large forces acting on passengers in collisions. This is why researchers and engineers are continually turning to laws of physics for advice. Road design features reduce initial velocity to reduce the risk of accidents as well as its impact on the passenger. Automotive safety companies are continuing to develop devices to improve vehicle safety, including inflatable seatbelts, 4-point seatbelts and knee airbags to name a few. Effect of Temperature on the Rate of Reaction between Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric Acid Investigation Chemical reactions are used in our everyday life, they literally keep us alive. They are used in food, respiration and everywhere else in the environment. A chemical reaction mainly occurs when reactants react together to produce a new product. The speed at which this reaction takes place is called the rate of reaction. The product produced has a number of particles in the solution that has formed from the reactants. The concentration is the amount of particles in a certain amount of water. If a cross is placed under the beaker of the solution, the cross will eventually disappear because the high temperature of the water will make the particles move faster because they have more energy and they will move more quicker to give a bigger impact which will cause more frequent and violent collisions and the solution will disappear as the product forms to create a misty solution. The rate of reaction is normally recorded in tables and can then be defined onto graphs to show how the rate curves of different factors affect the speed of the reaction. A rate curve is the curve of a graph that shows how the reaction changes at different intervals. The gradient of the graph tells us whether the different rate curves have the same relation, meaning if they have a similar rate of reaction. Reactions can take place in a variety of customs; they can bee steep or steady. The steeper the slope, the faster the reaction takes place. The steadier the slope, the slower the reaction takes place. Aim: The aim of my investigation is to find out whether the increase of temperature increases the rate of reaction between the two reactants of Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric acid. I will then find out and evaluate on how temperature affects this particular reaction. Factors There are four main factors, which affect the rate of reaction that are considered as variables for the experiment I will be doing, they are the following: Molecules can only collide when two of them meet together. This meeting between the two particles can only take place on the surface area of the material. If the surface area of the material is increased, the particles gather more space to collide with each other with force. With a large surface area, the particles will have more area to work on so the collision probability will be high. A catalyst is a separate substance to the ones you use in your experiment and is used to speed up the reaction between the reactants.

I Disagree with School Uniforms Essay

I think school uniforms are a bad decision for S. S Seward. S. S Seward students should not be required to wear an official school uniform because it doesn’t give the students a chance to express themselves and make them feel happy and make them feel like they belong. I’m also disagreeing because it causes financial problems and bullying. Financial difficulties seem to be a problem with the school uniforms. Schools claim that school uniforms are less expensive for parents; however, school uniforms generally mean an additional cost for parents, who now have to purchase different types of clothing for their children to wear in and out of school. Additionally, since uniforms involve specific requirements, parents may not be able to find uniform options in discount or thrift stores as they could if they had more freedom to choose their children’s wardrobes. Most schools with uniform requirements do, however, provide free uniforms to needy families. Bullying and Violence seem to be another problem with the school uniforms. Some school administrators believe that enforcing a uniform policy will eliminate the problems of discrimination and bullying. But kids will find a way to hurt one another, regardless of what they wear. If they wear uniforms, some children will bully each other over hairstyles or jewelry or shoe choices. They will mock each other for their parents’ professions or their socioeconomic status, no matter what they wear to school. A uniform isn’t an absolute solution to problems of school bullying and negative behavior. It also seems that there is not individual expression involved with the school uniforms. Students in school need to learn to express themselves, and their wardrobe choices are one way of doing this. When every child is forced to dress just like all his peers, he loses his freedom to choose how he wants to represent himself through his clothing. Additionally, some uniforms may conflict with a student’s religious beliefs and practices regarding proper attire. Teachers, on the other hand, may appreciate restrictions of personal expression through clothing, because students dress inappropriately at times. Many people feel that uniforms are a method of reining in the creativity and freedom of expression of teens and kids, and passing on the message that conformity is important. Contrary to popular belief, even with uniforms on, certain children will get picked on by others. Cliques will still be formed and students will find ways such as weight, complexion, and financial status to pass judgment upon their peers. School uniforms are very often unflattering, and it can damage a child’s self-image.

Oothoon in â€Å"Visions of the Daughters of Albion† is quite open about her feelings towards men namely her love for Theotormon even being as brazen to say, â€Å"I loved Theotormon/And I was not ashamed†(Blake iii. 2-3). Not only was she admitting her feelings, she was also proclaiming that it was not something she felt she had to hide or feel bad about; she was not apologetic about having sexual desires. Martha Ray in â€Å"The Thorn† had similar feelings for Stephen Hill and it is said that she, â€Å"Gave with a maiden’s true good will/ Her company to Stephen Hill† (Wordsworth 117-118), which signifies her giving up her virginity to the man she loved for what she believed to be an understanding that he would marry her afterwards. Although feelings and ardor for someone are natural and can not be controlled women were not supposed to give in to them and after Oothoon voicing and Martha Ray acting upon their passions their fates do not end up as joyous as they once had hoped and planned on them being, as if they were being punished for their feelings towards the ones they loved. In the beginning of †Visions of the Daughters of Albion† Oothoon is the image of the typical innocent little girl wandering around a field plucking flowers but on her way to see Theotormon when, â€Å"Bromion rent her with his thunders† (Blake 1. 17), and she is raped thus losing her innocence. For Martha Ray her innocence had already been taken from her when she gave herself up to Stephen Hill but after being denied by him when he married someone else she also lost her sanity. Even though both poems show the ludicrousness of the effects society has on people’s lives Oothoon is able accept what has happened to her and move on from it whereas Martha Ray gives into what has happened to her and lets it define her. Blake did not believe in conventions and felt that societys way of thinking was small minded and that feelings regarding the human body were natural and should not be suppressed. He did not agree with the way women were treated and the hindrance that was placed on their emotions. His thoughts on how women were treated can be seen in the fist line of the first plate when he says, â€Å"ENSLAV’D, the Daughters of Albion weep† (Blake 1. 1) showing that he sees the burden placed on women similar to the one placed on slaves. After that the poem becomes the story of Oothoon breaking free not only from the figurative bonds she is attached to by being a woman but also the actual bonds placed on her by Theotorum when he bounds Oothoon to her rapist, Bromian,†The adulterate pair/Bound back to back† (Blake 2. -6). â€Å"Visions of the Daughters of Albion† is written as an allegory which Blake used to comment on how the roles people held in British society was the cause of this style of enslavement of not only women but men as well. His use of an allegory also showed what Blake saw as the answer, which was to look west towards America. Si nce America had just freed itself from Britain rule he saw it as them breaking the connection that forced discrimination onto people. In this allegorical set up Oothoon is the representation of America and the potential the new country held and is called, â€Å"the soft soul of America† (Blake 1. 4). This shows that Oothoon’s struggle against the overly pious and righteous hold of the church shown through Theotormen’s character whose name actually means tormented by god and the over controlling lustful man displayed by Bromian’s character is really a struggle of breaking past conventions to just be a liberated person who is able to live and love freely. After her rape Oothoon at first aligns herself with the conventional idea of her needing to be purified when she calls upon Theotormons Eagles to prey upon her flesh which shows that this idea is connected to Theotormon as well but through questioning and talking comes to the realization that she did not ask to be raped and calls herself, â€Å"A virgin fill’d with virgin fancies/ Open to joy and to delight where ever beauty appears† (Blake 6. 21-22). This is important because it shows Oothoon reaking away from the conventions that have been forced upon her and starts to understand that beauty is everywhere and should not be limited. A line in the poem which meter is extended by the use of spondees to convey the importance of what is being said is, â€Å"I cry Love! Love! Love! Happy Happy Love! Free as the mountain wind! † (Blake 7. 16). The importance of this line is that it holds the message of the poem which is that love should be and have no restrictions jus t like nature shown by Blake referring to love being as free as a mountain wind which has nothing to block it off. Also by having Oothoon be the one speak this line it supports how Oothoon understands there is no need for all these rules and limitations that Theotormon is tormenting himself about. She even goes as far to question Theotormon about his devotion to religion asking, â€Å"Why dost thou seek religion? Is it because acts are not lovely, that thou seekest solitude, Where the horrible darkness is impressed with reflection of desire† (Blake 7. 9-11) She is able to realize that the life he is following is one filled with the same desires she has only he is destined to wallow in them since he can not act upon them and will end alone because of this. It is these realizations that Oothoon makes that show she is not a sinner being punished but a victim who had to overcome her role in society. Martha Ray however was not able to overcome her tragic event of losing the man she loved to another woman. The effect it was said to have on her changed who she was, â€Å"A cruel, cruel fire, they say, Into her bones was sent: It dried her body like a cinder, And almost turn’d her brain to tinder. † (Wordsworth 129-132) This shows how she lost her sanity and becomes target of multiple stereotypes and is shunned from society for multiple reasons. She is a woman who acted on sexual desires that ended up badly which caused her to lose her mind and is said to have killed her baby because of it. Another way she is victimized by her community is the speculation that surrounds her life. On numerous occasions the narrator makes it clear that the story he is telling is not certain. Examples of this are, â€Å"I cannot tell; but some will say/ She hanged her baby on the tree,† (Wordsworth 214-215) and â€Å"No more I know I wish I did, / And I would tell it all to you;† (Wordsworth 155-156). This shows that this nothing but a story and one that is based on speculations. There was never any sympathy for what happened to Martha, she was never looked at as a victim hurt by Stephen Hill. In â€Å"The Thorn† Stephen Hill plays a similar role to the one that Bromian played in â€Å"Visions of the Daughters of Albion† since he is controlled by his desires. He does not care who he hurts as long as his needs are met just the way Bromian hurts Oothoon when he rapes her. Oothoon’s rape takes away her future with Theotorum and when Stephen rejects a future with Martha he takes away her place within in society. Martha loses her innocence twice in the poem the first one being when she gives up her virginity the other is in the death of the baby whether it is real or not. If she did kill her own baby she then has blood on her hand which is referenced through the color red that she wears on her cloak and is now a murderer and has killed a purely innocent being but even if the death of the baby is pure speculation Martha in eyes of society is shunned and deemed unstable. An important line that is repeated by Martha is, â€Å"Oh misery! Oh misery! † it shows how Martha has given into what society says about her. She does not put up a fight like Oothoon did to try to get the people to see things in her way by talking out her thoughts and feelings but rather gives into what is being said and cries about it. She accepts the label that has been put on her of being of unstable mind and an outcast since she does not try to interact with anyone else either and just goes up to the hill to sit by the thorn. When looking at these two poems the similarity of how women were put down in society if they acted against the grain and were punished for their actions even if they were out of their control. However I think Oothoon was portrayed stronger than Martha Ray since she was able to overcome her place in society and would not except the names and attitude Theotormon was giving her, and Martha was not able to overcome the fate that placed upon her and gave into what other people were saying.

Comparison Between Self-rated and Dentist-rated Dental Care Comparison between self-rated and dentist-rated dental care need among university students in Xi’an city, China Running title: self-rated and dentist-rated dental care ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to compare the difference between the self-rated and dentist-rated dental care need among university students in China and to evaluate the related factors. Participants: 757 university students aged 17-26 years. Methods: The study was carried out in 2013 in Xi’an city, China. The students were asked to complete a questionnaire that included the participants’ general information, the self-rated dental care need and their experiences of dental care. Dental conditions of each student were examined by six dentists by field survey. Results: Totally 52% of the students had consistent self-rating with dentist-rating (30.1% need and 21.9% not need). 39.0% of the students in need of dental care chose â€Å"not need† and 9.0% did not need but chose â€Å"need†. The self-rated dental care need had statistical differences in gender, census register and major. While the dentist-rated dental care need did not. Only 30.9% of the respondent stu dents did not need dental care. Conclusion: Self-rated dental care need was significantly associated with gender, census register and major and a number of Chinese university students inaccurately rated their dental care need. Their dental health status was not good. Key words: dental care; self-rating; dentist-rating; university students; major; census register Introduction Survey of the self-rated dental care need is a basic method for dental care studies. It is a simple direct way to study the perceptions of dental health, which is considered valid, reliable and cost-effective 1. And the accuracy of the self-rated dental care need can truly reflects the dental care ability of either individuals or communities. Hongjun Yin, from the Long Island University thinks that self-rated method has already been widely used in health surveys as a single-item measurement of health-rated quality of life 2. And it has been proved reliable and valid 3. There are few differences in the effects of variables associated with self-rated dental care need by different nationalities 4. So self-rated dental care need is an important method to observe dental health status and attitudes of either individuals or communities. Self-rated dental care need has been extensively studied in university students, where a range of associated factors has been identified 1-5. Now days, most research on self-rated dental care need is concentrating on the factors that affect the need 2, 6-15. What’s more, these studies have found many associated factors, such as gender, socioeconomic characteristics, age and education 16. However, the significance of each factor stills remained to be confirmed. Meanwhile, there has been relatively less study on the comparison of self-rated and dentist-rated dental care need. The comparison can truly reflect the accuracy of the self-rated dental care need and the dental care need status. It can also provide reference for the public health bureaus in policy making. The data from National Bureau of Statistics showed that, by the end of 2010, the number of university students would reach to 22.318 million in China 17. The age of university students ranges between 17-24 years. This age group is considered less vulnerable to sicknesses. Meanwhile, they also considered themselves to be less likely to get sick 18. So the public health bureaus often ignore this group of people 19. However, there is little study focusing on this group of people’s dental status to which we must pay attention. Therefore, we carried out the survey of the self-rated dental care need and dentist-rated need among university students in Xi’an city, China. In this study, we investigated both the census register and major, which two were seldom reported before. We also designed a new classification for the dental care need to replace the â€Å"need† and â€Å"not need† classification, which is more detailed and comprehensive. Methods and materials Subjects The study was approved by the University of Nebraska Lincolns institutional review board; all subjects gave informed consent. The subjects, undergraduate students ranging from 18 years of age and above, were recruited from 11AMto 1:30 PM during January 2009 at the 2 university unions. Participants received nominal gifts for completing the questionnaires. Study Sample This study was carried out in 2013 in the city of Xi’an (population 8.467.837) in Shaanxi province, China. Sample design consisted of 5 universities that were selected randomly in Xi’an. The 757 students, including 574 males and 183 females were selected randomly from each department of every university and the age ranged from 17 to 26 years old (20.5 ±1.4 years old, median 21 years old). The student source was nationwide, that covered 31 different provincial administrative regions of China (there are total 34 provincial administrative regions in China) (Table 1). 2.2 Design of the Dentist-Rated Dental Care Need the Self-Rated Dental Care Need According to the damage and urgency of dental diseases, we divided dental care need into four degrees by different conditions20. The first degree was designed to represent healthy dental condition, and the other three degrees were designed to include various dental diseases. The first degree: Dental condition is healthy. The respondent does not need specific dental care. The second degree: Dental condition is not healthy. The respondent needs selective dental care, but does not need treatment urgently, including 6 types: (1) moderate dental calculus; (2) shallow caries do not develop; (3) periodontal disease localizing in a small range, do not develop (4) need orthodontic treatment (5) need preventative treatment (6) need prosthodontics treatment. The third degree: Dental condition is not healthy. The respondent needs dental care as soon as possible, including 6 types: (1) severe caries; (2) severe periodontal disease; (3) chronic dental pulp disease or periapical disease; (4) severe dental calculus; (5) chronic oral infections; (6) one or more teeth need extraction. The fourth degree: Dental condition is not healthy. The respondent needs dental care urgently, including 4 types: (1) oral and maxillofacial trauma (2) acute dental pulp disease or periapical disease (3) acute oral infections (4) acute pericoronitis. 2.3 Assessments and Measurements The self-rated dental care need was represented by the question: â€Å"Considering to your dental status, do you think you have the need of dental care?† 21. The answers were: â€Å"need† and â€Å"not need† 6. The whole process was strictly based on the international dental survey method standards established by the WHO 22. Dental conditions of each student were examined by six dentists using field survey method1. All the dentists had passed the standard test survey. Inter and intra consistency check coincidence rate was higher than 95% 3. All the examinations were conducted under standard inspection light 23. 2.4 Statistical Analyses The age range was divided into three groups: â€Å"≠¤19†, â€Å"20† and â€Å"≠¥21†. Census register was divided into urban and rural; gender was divided into male and female; and the major was divided into science and artS 24. In addition, the self-rated dental care need was compared with the dentist-rated dental care need. Chi-square test was used to assess the significance (P 25. FoxPro 6.0 was used to build up the database. Afterwards, SPSS 17.0 (SN: 5068167, PN: 33132001) was used for statistical description and analysis. Results 3.1 The factors affecting the self-rated and dentist-rated dental care need The self-rated dental care need had statistical differences in gender, census register and major. In addition, the number of students who chose â€Å"need† increased accordingly with the age (Table 1). While the dentist-rated dental care need did not show significant differences in these four aspects (Table 2). 3.2 Comparisons between the self-rated and dentist-rated dental care need Self-rated dental care need showed that 296 students chose â€Å"need† and 461 students chose â€Å"not need†. The comparison between self-rated and dentist-rated dental care need showed that 48.0% (39.0%+9.0%) of the students rated their dental care need inaccurately. 39.0% of the students in need of dental care but chose â€Å"not need†; 9.0% of the students not in need but chose â€Å"need†. Totally 69.1% (39.0%+30.1%) of patients were in need of dental care rated by dentists (Table 3). 3.2 The dental care need rated by dentists and the clinic experience of the students The results of the dentist-rated dental care need showed that only 30.9 % of the students did not need dental care (the first degree); 57.2% of the students needed selective dental care (the second degree); 11.1% of the students needed dental care as soon as possible (the third degree); 0.8% of the students needed dental care urgently (the fourth degree) (Table 4). We collected the dental clinic experiences of the students at the same time. Among the 757 respondent students, 540 (71.3%) said that they didn’t have been to dental clinic before. Discussion 4.1 Associated factors with the self-rated dental care need (age, gender, census register, major) In community health studies, self-rated dental care need is frequently used, including national health surveys. It is a helpful general indicator of overall dental statuS10, 26-28. Jylha et al. from the University of Tampere believes that the way to judge the health status of the students may vary according to gender, age groups, social and cultural backgrounds8. Results showed that the rate of choosing â€Å"need† increases proportionately with age (Table 1). The study of 26,111 Hong Kong students conducted by Lee et al. from The Chinese University of Hong Kong showed that older students had higher prevalence rates of health-compromising behavior than younger students 19. At the same time, a study by Shin et al. from Chonnam National University Medical School showed that the older students rated their self-rated health more negatively in both men and women9. So, age could be one of the factors associated with the self-rated dental care need. In our study, 47.0% of the female students thought that they were in need of dental care. While only 36.6% of the male students thought they were in need of dental care (Table 1). It indicated that female students were more likely than male students to rate their dental conditions poorly. The results corresponded to the research by Hee-Young Shin et al. ,9 their studies also showed that women were more likely than men to rate their self-rated health as poor. Therefore, gender could be another factor associated with the self-rated dental care need. In accordance with their census register, university students can be divided into urban and rural sourced in China5. In this study, the students from rural areas were more likely to think that they were in need of dental care than the students from urban areas (Table 1), though these two groups were not statistically different in the dentist-rated dental care need (Table 2). Meanwhile, there were no previous studies we could refer to. Therefore, whether the census register is one of the factors associated with the self-rated dental need is still need to be confirmed by studies with larger sample size. The results also showed that the arts students were more likely to think themselves in need of dental care than the science students. Despite the fact that they had no statistical difference in the dentist-rated dental care need. Therefore, the major might be one factor associated with the self-rated dental need. 4.2 Comparison between Self-Rated and Dentist-Rated Dental Care Need In most developed countries and some developing countries, health care is regarded as one of the public services 14. Nowadays in China, health care reform is being intensified, and people are paying more and more attention to their health29. But overall, the demand for health care is the starting point for the Chinese government to make health care reform. In this study, there were a large number of Chinese university students who could not rate their dental care need accurately. The results showed that 60.9% of the students thought that they had no need of dental care, but only 36.0% of which were proved really not need dental care after dental examination. The remaining 64% of them all had dental care need at different degrees, among which 54.7% of them needed selective dental care, 8.5% of them needed dental care as soon as possible, and 0.9% of them needed dental care urgently (Table 4). The lack of dental care consciousness might account for a significant problem. In this study, 39.0% of the students had dental care need but considered themselves not in need. It showed that the university students were lack of dental knowledge and self-awareness30. Meanwhile, the results showed that only 30.9% of the respondent students did not need any specific dental care. The other 69.1% all had dental care needs to different degrees. It showed that dental diseases had become common among university students. There was an urgent need to strengthen the dental care services in universities31. The data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed that, by the end of 2010, the number of university student would reach to 22.318 million in China17. So it will be a huge need for dental care services. 4.3 Limitations Compared to the 45.7% given by the state council information office of the Peoples Republic of China, in this research, the female students accounted for 24.2% in all the respondent students. We think the difference came from the sample universities we chose. Because the major subjects for three of the five universities are science and technology, military or engineering, the students in these three universities are mostly male which led to the difference. 4.4 Implications School is one of the most basic places to prevent dental diseases. Students would benefit for a lifetime if they formed good dental care habits at university. We suggest strengthening the dental care knowledge propaganda in university students in China32. We also suggest adding dental knowledge, lectures and pictures in university TV shows and distributing dental care manuals to university students. Lastly, we suggest the Chinese government deepen the health care reform, pay more attention to the dental health care conditions of the university students. This research used a new design for dentist-rated dental care need, which was first introduced to the survey of university students. It have been applied in the survey of the residents in quake-hit areas in Dujiangyan city in 200820. It is designed to include most types of the dental diseases that a dentist could meet. Moreover, obviously, this new classification provides a unified reference for the dentists, which is more scientific and accurate. Background:When assessing health status, physicians may focus on objective symptoms and diagnoses, whereas individuals may focus more on subjective symptoms, functional limitations and quality of life.(25) Table 1.
